Kwankwaso Says NDC May Consider Restoring Petrol Subsidy, Raising Questions on Cost
Rabiu Kwankwaso, the NDC vice-presidential candidate, said during a Channels Television interview that the party could consider restoring petrol subsidy as part of efforts to reduce Nigeria’s high energy costs. He said the party would do whatever is necessary, including subsidy, while addressing corruption in the system. The position raises major questions about the cost, scope and duration of any proposed subsidy. Nigeria’s previous subsidy regime consumed substantial public revenue and encouraged cross-border smuggling. Any new plan would need to explain the pump-price target, who benefits, how it will be funded and how abuse will be prevented. Kwankwaso also discussed insecurity and poverty in Northern Nigeria, acknowledging that the problems predate the current administration. The interview further examined his political influence in Kano and allegations about election manipulation, for which he said he had heard concerns from people around him. The central policy question remains whether a subsidy can be restored without repeating the fiscal pressure, fraud and smuggling associated with the old system.
