Claim Seeks New British Museum Label for Ezza Oweze Royal Staff
A researcher has challenged the British Museum’s “Unknown Ritual Object 1908.42” label, identifying the item as an Ezza Oweze royal staff, also known as Alo. The claim links the object to Onueke in Ezza South, Ebonyi State. The submission cites N. W. Thomas’s 1913 account of the Oweze title among the Ezza people and says the staff’s carving style is comparable to Igbo-Ukwu works. It proposes that the object should be labelled “Ezza Oweze Staff, Nkume Nwota Shrine, Onueke.” The account also connects the staff to Ezza oral history, the Nkume Nwota shrine and the Anakiwha period. Some of the stated dates and origin claims are based on oral tradition and would require archaeological or museum verification.
