Enugu Community Accused of Banishment of Pregnant 16-Year-Old Abuse Survivor
A 16-year-old girl from Nenwe in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State was reportedly publicly banished after becoming pregnant following alleged abuse by her father. Reports say community elders treated the incident as a traditional taboo and expelled both the girl and the alleged perpetrator. The decision triggered outrage because the girl is a minor and should be treated as a survivor in need of protection, not punishment. The Enugu State Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development has reportedly rescued the girl and moved her to protective care for medical attention and counselling. Authorities are said to be seeking the father, while rights groups are calling for accountability over the community’s treatment of the child.
