Nigerian sprinter Godson Oghenebrume has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison in Louisiana for possessing a Glock 43X 9mm while on an F-1 student visa. U.S. Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick issued the punishment following his conviction under federal firearm laws. The incident unfolded in February 2025 when Oghenebrume discharged the weapon during an argument with his ex-girlfriend outside his apartment, endangering their infant and others nearby. He later discarded the pistol when law enforcement arrived. Upon completing his sentence, Oghenebrume faces deportation from the United States. The U.S. Attorney’s Office praised Homeland Security Investigations, ATF and local deputies for their role in the investigation.

This seems unusually harsh for a first-time firearms offense, especially for someone on a student visa.

If you're studying abroad, always review local firearm laws and confirm say you no carry forbidden items.
