South African Envoy Denies Nigerians Are Targeted Over Relationships With Local Women
South Africa’s Consul-General to Nigeria, Prof. Bobby Moroe, has rejected claims that Nigerians are attacked in South Africa because of relationships with South African women. He said personal relationships are protected in a constitutional democracy and that love should not be determined by nationality. Moroe said South Africans’ concerns are mainly about some undocumented foreign nationals and alleged breaches of immigration laws, not Nigerians’ relationships with local women. He argued that peaceful protests over immigration concerns are often wrongly described as xenophobia. The envoy also disputed allegations that every death involving a Nigerian in South Africa is linked to xenophobic violence. He cited a recent case in Cape Town involving a Nigerian suspect who reportedly died after swallowing banned substances while facing arrest, though he noted that the full facts of the case still needed verification.
