Ondo Signs 2026 Power Law, Creates Electricity Regulatory Commission

Ondo Signs 2026 Power Law, Creates Electricity Regulatory Commission

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has signed the State Electric Power Sector (Amendment) Law, 2026, updating the state’s 2020 power law in line with the Electricity Act, 2023. The law creates the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Commission to regulate tariffs, issue licences, oversee mini-grids and support renewable-energy investments. It also establishes agencies for system operations, market operations, equipment standards and operator certification. The framework makes metering compulsory for grid-connected and off-grid users, protects community and privately funded electricity infrastructure, and introduces penalties for deliberate refusal to connect to the grid. The state says the law is intended to attract private investment, expand power infrastructure and support industrial growth.
