Itsekiri Elder Recounts Wartime Anti-Igbo Propaganda
An Itsekiri elder has recalled how misinformation during the Nigerian Civil War allegedly shaped negative views of Igbo people among communities in the former Eastern Region. She said that while growing up, people identified strongly with the Eastern Region and traded through Onitsha Market. According to her, the absence of independent sources of information made it harder to challenge wartime narratives.
