Who Is Verifying the Growing Wealth of Nigeria’s Politicians?

Nigeria’s political class often draws attention for luxury vehicles, expensive properties and businesses linked to some office holders. The key question is not whether every politician is wealthy, but whether the source of that wealth can be explained, declared and independently verified. The Code of Conduct Bureau requires public officers to declare their assets and liabilities when they assume office and leave office. It can verify declarations, receive petitions and investigate suspected breaches before referring cases to the Code of Conduct Tribunal. False or incomplete declarations can lead to removal from office, disqualification and forfeiture of improperly acquired assets. Official salaries are only part of the picture. The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission sets remuneration for political office holders, but unexplained wealth cannot be assessed by salary alone. Nigerians deserve to know what an official owned before taking office, what was declared, what was acquired afterwards and whether the relevant agencies have properly verified those changes.
