AU Must Take Real Action to End Xenophobia in South Africa
Xenophobia in South Africa has deep roots predating 1994. Attacks on foreigners persist due to job competition, market rivalry and misinformation. Condemnation alone has failed to stop the violence. The African Union was founded to unite 55 nations under Pan-African ideals. Yet it lacks enforcement power. Diplomatic notes and statements have not deterred attacks on migrants. To restore peace, Africa needs real consequences. Governments should teach Pan-African history in schools. They could impose targeted sanctions on major South African businesses through the AU. South Africa must also arrest and prosecute mob leaders behind the violence. Do you think AU sanctions can work, or should each country act independently? Share your thoughts.
