Can We Build a Better Nigeria Without Becoming Better Nigerians?

We all want a better Nigeria, but are we prepared to live by the honesty, discipline, accountability and justice we demand from leaders? If laws were enforced fairly, many of us might struggle with the same system we praise. Corruption is not limited to politicians. It appears in exploitative rent hikes, fake products, inflated prices, misleading loan offers, vote buying, internet fraud and the misuse of public spaces. We condemn these practices until we have an opportunity to benefit from them ourselves. Tribal loyalty also keeps poor leadership alive when we defend incompetent or corrupt people simply because they are from our ethnic group. Nigeria is shaped by its citizens: in government, markets, schools, businesses, religious centres and communities. A better Nigeria must begin with better Nigerians. We should examine our own actions, reject shortcuts and exploitation, and choose integrity even when nobody is watching.
