NUPRC Awards 37 Oil and Gas Blocks to 31 Companies in Landmark 2025 Licensing Round
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has announced 31 successful firms in its 2025 licensing round. These companies have won rights to develop 37 oil and gas blocks across onshore, shallow-water and deep-offshore regions. At the commercial bid conference in Abuja on July 21, 2026, 143 companies submitted 200 bids for 37 of the 50 blocks on offer. Frontier basins such as the Benue Trough, Chad Basin and Anambra Basin attracted notable investor interest for the first time. Final licence awards remain subject to payment of signature bonuses and ministerial approval under the Petroleum Industry Act 2021. The Commission Chief Executive thanked the president for backing a transparent process, congratulated winners, and reminded them of the “drill or drop” requirement for timely field development. The exercise was monitored by representatives from the Petroleum and Finance ministries, NEITI, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance and fairness.
