South Africa Leads Africa in Online Gambling as Nigeria Ranks Third
South Africa has the highest online gambling participation rate among five African countries surveyed, according to GWI data for the second quarter of 2025. About 32.3% of internet users aged 16 and above visited a betting or gambling website or app in the previous month. Ghana ranked second at 21.5%, followed by Nigeria at 18%, Kenya at 16% and Morocco at 7.3%. The figures measure participation among internet users, not the amount of money wagered or gambling industry revenue. Smartphone access, mobile payments and the popularity of football are driving the growth of digital betting across the continent. In Nigeria, betting around the English Premier League, Champions League and major tournaments remains a major draw. The growth also raises concerns about addiction, underage access, unlicensed operators and consumer protection. Stronger regulation and responsible-gambling measures will be important as the market expands.
