Are Money and Marriage Expectations Making Modern Dating Harder?
I came across a comment during a relationship discussion that stayed with me: some men may be looking for life partners, while some women may be looking for financial security and a better life. It is a harsh generalisation, but it raises a real question about modern dating in Nigeria. There is nothing wrong with wanting a financially responsible partner, especially in a difficult economy. However, problems arise when a person’s earning power, car, location or ability to fund a lifestyle becomes more important than character, compatibility and sincere intentions. At the same time, some men expect beauty, youth, loyalty and submission while offering little stability, effort or emotional maturity. Marriage should not be an escape from poverty or a reward for someone who has done the bare minimum. It is a partnership that requires financial responsibility, emotional support, honesty, compatibility and mutual sacrifice. A person’s age, past or bank balance alone cannot determine whether they will make a good spouse. Do men and women now approach relationships with different goals, or are these stereotypes hiding the many people who genuinely want to build together? Can a relationship last when one partner sees marriage as a partnership and the other sees it mainly as financial advancement?
