Senate Says 2027 Elections Will Not Derail Constitution Amendment Process
The Senate says the ongoing constitutional amendment process will continue despite political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections. Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu said the 10th National Assembly is committed to passing the proposed amendments before its tenure ends in June 2027. He stressed that lawmakers would remain in office and continue legislative work after the January 2027 elections. The review covers issues including governance and political restructuring. Any amendment must be approved by both chambers of the National Assembly and endorsed by at least two-thirds of state Houses of Assembly. Past review efforts failed to secure enough support from state legislatures, but the Senate insists the current process will not be abandoned as election activities increase.
