Nigeria’s Q3 Security Update: 1,487 Terrorists Neutralised, 1,160 Kidnap Victims Rescued
Nigeria’s security agencies recorded major operations in July and August 2026, according to a third-quarter update. The Armed Forces conducted 7,062 operations, neutralised 1,487 terrorists and insurgents, arrested 354 suspects, and rescued 777 kidnapped victims. The Police also arrested 1,334 suspects and rescued 383 kidnap victims. The update highlights growing coordination among the military, police, DSS, Customs, NDLEA, immigration and financial-intelligence agencies. Customs handed over 399 intercepted firearms, while the NDLEA arrested 3,705 suspects, secured 471 convictions and seized nearly 54,000kg of illicit drugs. Authorities also froze accounts holding more than ₦9.8 billion linked to drug-cartel activities. Beyond terrorism and crime, the report identifies trafficking, cyber-enabled crime, misinformation, flooding, fires and road crashes as national-security concerns. NEMA provided flood relief to 24,625 households, while the Federal Fire Service responded to 426 incidents and reported saving 585 lives. The central message is that security cannot rely on one institution alone. Strong intelligence-sharing, credible public communication, community trust and cooperation between citizens and government are presented as essential to preventing threats before they escalate.
