Gambia Gives Nigerian Banks Until December 2026 to Replace Non-Gambian Staff
The Central Bank of The Gambia has directed commercial banks to replace non-Gambian employees affected by its expatriate staffing rules with qualified Gambian nationals by 31 December 2026. The directive affects lenders including Access Bank, GTBank, FirstBank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank. It followed a review of foreign staffing in the banking sector, which the regulator said found non-Gambian workers employed outside formally recognised expatriate positions. Banks must carry out the changes gradually, provide for skills transfer and maintain operational continuity. Employers that breach the expatriate-staffing provisions may face fines of at least 500,000 dalasi. The move has renewed debate about local jobs, ECOWAS free-movement rights and opportunities for Nigerian professionals working across West Africa.
