Shehu Sani: Atiku Victory in 2027 Could Deepen Zoning Dispute

Former Kaduna Central senator Shehu Sani says Nigeria’s informal rotational presidency arrangement could face serious strain if Atiku Abubakar wins the 2027 presidential election. Speaking on a television programme, Sani argued that southern Nigeria should complete an eight-year turn in office before power returns to the North in 2031. He said a northern victory in 2027 could create resentment and deepen regional tensions. Sani stressed that Atiku and other northern aspirants have a constitutional right to contest. However, he urged political parties to field southern candidates, describing zoning as a political arrangement intended to promote balance between the North and South.
