Appeal Court Upholds UNICAL Professor’s Two-Year Sentence, Orders Fresh Hearing on Second Count

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed the two-year prison sentence imposed on Professor Cyril Osim Ndifon, former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Calabar. The court upheld his conviction for soliciting indecent photographs from a female student through electronic communication. The sentence carries no option of a fine. However, the appellate court held that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction over a separate charge of allegedly conferring an undue advantage. It directed that the matter be commenced before the Cross River State High Court, while the ICPC says it is considering further legal action on the jurisdiction ruling.
