Headies Founder Questions Artistes Who Seek Foreign Awards but Skip Local Entries
Headies founder Ayo Animashaun has questioned Nigerian artistes who publicise submissions to foreign award bodies but do not enter their work for The Headies. In social-media posts, Animashaun said some artistes later complain about missing nominations despite failing to submit their entries. He added that the awards organisers would stand by their decisions as long as artistes, sponsors and other stakeholders understand their vision. The remarks come as several Nigerian acts announce Grammy entries and as The Headies faces criticism over the postponement of its planned Toronto ceremony to April 2027. The awards, formerly known as the Hip Hop World Awards, began in 2006 and marks its 20th anniversary this year.
