Nigeria Plans Large-Scale Local Production of Weapons Within One Year
Nigeria plans to begin large-scale local production of weapons, ammunition and other defence equipment within the next year, Defence Minister Christopher Musa has said. The plan is expected to reduce dependence on imported military hardware and help the country meet the needs of its armed forces. Nigeria also hopes to export selected equipment to other African countries. Musa announced the initiative after the Africa International Defence Exhibition, which brought together governments, military institutions, manufacturers and technology innovators. He said the Federal Government will pursue investments, technology transfers, research and partnerships to build local capacity. The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria is expected to play a central role in expanding domestic production.
