Johannesburg Mayoral Race: Helen Zille and Herman Mashaba Emerge as Key Contenders
Johannesburg will elect a new mayor in the November 4 municipal elections. The contest is closely watched because the city is South Africa’s economic hub and has faced years of unstable coalition governments, failing services and infrastructure problems. Democratic Alliance candidate Helen Zille is campaigning on her record as former Cape Town mayor and Western Cape premier. She has promised to address water and power cuts, potholes, crime, billing problems and deteriorating public infrastructure. ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba is seeking a return to the office he held from 2016 to 2019. His campaign focuses on tackling corruption, improving law enforcement, rebuilding infrastructure and addressing undocumented migration and crime. With no clear candidate from the governing ANC-led coalition, opposition parties are seen as having a strong chance of leading the City of Johannesburg after the vote.
