I Filmed an Alleged Ballot Box Hijacking at My Port Harcourt Polling Unit
During the March 2023 Rivers State governorship election, I was at Holy Family Catholic Church in Woji, Port Harcourt, when vehicles carrying police officers and other men arrived at our polling unit as vote counting was about to begin. I discreetly started recording after hearing reports of attacks at other polling units. I filmed men being instructed to carry the ballot boxes into a vehicle while voters questioned where the materials were being taken. A police officer noticed my phone and seized it, but I raised the alarm and other voters joined me in demanding its return. After I recovered it, one of the men allegedly threatened me before they left with the polling boxes. The footage was later shared widely online, and that was how my attempt to document what happened at my polling unit went viral.
