Nigeria Needs Accountability, Not Religious Excuses
I believe religion has become an excuse for Nigeria’s repeated failures. Leaders travel abroad to pray for answers while poverty, unemployment and poor public services continue to worsen at home. A recent World Bank poverty brief highlights how India has made major progress in reducing poverty through deliberate investment in human capital, science, technology and industry. Nigeria, by contrast, has struggled to provide stable electricity, quality healthcare, education, food security and meaningful economic opportunities. Prayer should not replace competence, planning or public accountability. Public office holders must be judged by the results they deliver, not by promises of spiritual solutions. We do not vote for God; we vote for people. Until Nigerians consistently hold elected leaders accountable, the country may continue to lose valuable years to poor leadership.
