Atiku Condemns FG’s Sluggish Response to Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians in South Africa
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the federal government’s handling of the latest wave of anti-immigrant violence in South Africa. At least two Nigerians have been killed since tensions flared last month. Atiku said smaller African nations like Ghana showed urgency by evacuating hundreds of citizens, while Nigeria only reacted after being “shamed into action.” He described the government’s slow response as “deeply troubling” for a country that claims leadership in Africa. He called on the FG to issue a strong travel advisory, activate evacuation plans for Nigerians who wish to return, and ramp up diplomatic pressure on South African authorities. Atiku also urged the African Union to create a lasting continental framework to curb xenophobic violence. More than 130 Nigerians in South Africa have already registered for repatriation amid growing harassment and threats.
