Why Some Educated Nigerian Youths Are Turning to Cybercrime
Education has long been seen as a route to stability and success in Nigeria. Yet some people arrested for internet fraud are students, graduates and young professionals. This has raised difficult questions about why a minority of educated youths choose cybercrime. Unemployment, limited opportunities and pressure to succeed can make illegal income appear attractive. Social media also promotes images of luxury and instant wealth, while peer influence can normalise fraud in some circles. Digital skills, strong communication and familiarity with online platforms may further enable more sophisticated scams. Most Nigerian students and graduates are law-abiding and work hard for legitimate careers. However, cybercrime damages Nigeria’s reputation, affects honest citizens abroad and creates distrust around Nigerian businesses and professionals. Addressing the problem will require more than arrests. Better jobs, entrepreneurship support, digital ethics education, financial literacy, mentorship and stronger enforcement can help make honest work a more rewarding path to success.
