Nigeria’s Mobile Terror Networks: Why Dislodging Insurgents Isn’t Enough
The Defence Headquarters’ revelation that terrorists driven out from other regions abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State should alarm every Nigerian. Military pressure in one zone often pushes militants into new areas instead of eliminating them. As troops intensify operations in traditional hotspots, armed groups are relocating, regrouping and spreading fear in communities once deemed safe. This pattern exposes gaps in intelligence sharing, internal border surveillance and coordinated tracking. Dislodging terrorists must be followed by sustained pursuit, aerial monitoring and better forest policing to stop them from establishing fresh bases. Stronger cooperation between the military, police, intelligence agencies and local vigilantes is essential. Communities need encouragement and protection to report suspicious activity. Nigeria cannot win its fight against insurgency if violent groups retain the freedom to move, regroup and strike.
