Tinubu’s Aide Defends President’s Third Straight UNGA Absence as Atiku Demands Answers

President Bola Tinubu will again be represented at the United Nations General Assembly by Vice President Kashim Shettima, marking his third consecutive absence from the annual gathering. Ademola Osodi, the President’s Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs and Protocol, said Tinubu’s absence would not reduce Nigeria’s international standing. He said the President is focused on domestic priorities, including the economy and security, while Nigeria remains active in regional, continental and global forums. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar disagreed, arguing that repeated delegation denies Nigeria the President’s direct visibility at a key diplomatic meeting. He said UNGA offers leaders opportunities to pursue trade, investment, development financing and bilateral partnerships. The development has renewed debate over whether the President should personally attend one of the world’s most important diplomatic gatherings.
