ISIS-Inspired Plotter Receives 50 More Years for Attacking US Prison Officers
Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy, a Canadian serving a 40-year sentence over an ISIS-inspired plot targeting New York City, has received an additional 50 years in prison for attacking two correctional officers in 2020. Prosecutors said he used a makeshift weapon to stab an officer in the head and face at a federal prison in Pennsylvania. The officer later lost his right eye. A second officer was stabbed in the hand while responding to the attack. El Bahnasawy pleaded guilty to assault, possessing prison contraband and providing material support to ISIS. His lawyer said longstanding mental health challenges and inadequate psychiatric care contributed to the prison attack, while federal authorities said the sentence will keep him imprisoned for decades.
