VDM’s NBA Conference Remarks Should Not Condemn All Security Personnel
I watched VDM’s comments at the NBA annual conference and the reactions that followed. It is disappointing to see people applaud remarks that appear to condemn the entire police and military. There are bad officers, and they should be held accountable. However, it is unfair to describe all service personnel as “unknown gunmen.” During the height of the IPOB/ESN crisis in the South-East and South-South, security officers faced serious risks while trying to contain violence and protect communities. Only recently, reports said about 10 police officers were killed while fighting banditry in Katsina. Across the country, police and military personnel confront terrorists, bandits and other criminals, often with inadequate equipment, training and manpower. Some pay with their lives. Public criticism is necessary, but it should be fair and specific. The sacrifices of service men and women should not be dismissed because of the actions of bad eggs within the system.
