Osun Election: Let Voters Decide Without Intimidation or State Interference

Osun’s governorship election must be decided by voters, not by intimidation, violence or the partisan use of public institutions. The contest between Governor Ademola Adeleke and APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji should be about records, policies and the people’s choice. I am concerned about the timing of the EFCC’s decision to freeze the Osun State Government account amid allegations of possible vote-buying. Even where an agency acts within its legal powers, it must avoid conduct that creates the impression of interference in an election. The same standard of scrutiny must apply to all parties and governments. INEC, the police, military, judiciary and other state institutions must remain neutral. Their duty is to protect voters, uphold the law, count valid votes transparently and ensure that no candidate gains an unfair advantage through intimidation or official influence. Osun deserves a peaceful election focused on education, healthcare, jobs, infrastructure, security and workers’ welfare. Whoever wins should do so through a credible ballot, while the other side should pursue any legitimate grievances through the law. No political office is worth the blood of any Nigerian.
