Swiss and Austrian Women Freed After More Than a Year in Niger Captivity
Swiss national Eva Gretzmacher, 76, and Austrian Claudia Abbt, 69, have been released after being held captive in Niger for more than a year. The women arrived in Benghazi, eastern Libya, where they thanked eastern military commander Khalifa Haftar and his son, Saddam Haftar, for helping to secure their freedom. In a video broadcast by Libyan media, Gretzmacher said she had been held for one year and nine months. Both women appeared visibly weak in the footage. Their abduction and the circumstances surrounding their release have not been fully detailed.
