IRI Praises Osun Election Conduct, Calls for Stronger Ballot Secrecy and BVAS Upgrades
The International Republican Institute has commended INEC for the generally peaceful conduct of the August 15 Osun governorship election. The group praised the commission for reprinting and distributing ballot materials on time after a court ruling added the SDP to the ballot. However, IRI said vote buying remained a major concern. It urged INEC to strengthen ballot secrecy so voters can cast their ballots privately and cannot be pressured to prove how they voted to political sponsors. The institute also identified BVAS reliability, security coordination, misinformation and AI-generated propaganda as areas needing urgent attention. It called for better technology stress-testing, quicker official communication during disruptions and stronger measures to protect voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
