105 Nigerians Evacuated from South Africa as 27 Die in Separate Mass Shootings
At least 27 people were killed and 26 others injured in two separate mass shootings in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South African police said. No suspects had been arrested at the time of the report. The Johannesburg attack left 17 people dead at a tavern in Wedela, while 10 people were killed at a barbecue venue outside Cape Town. Authorities said the motives remain unclear as South Africa continues to battle gun violence linked to gangs, organised crime and local disputes. Meanwhile, Nigeria has evacuated 105 distressed citizens from South Africa following xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks. The returnees, including 82 adults and 23 children, arrived in Lagos on 24 September 2026. The latest batch brings the number of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa since June 2026 to 1,821. More citizens undergoing clearance are expected to return when arrangements are completed.
