TUC Rejects Three-Month Wage Award, Calls for Lasting Salary Increase
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) says another three-month wage award will not provide lasting relief for workers. It is calling on the Federal Government to raise salaries to improve workers’ purchasing power and living standards. The government agreed to a ₦70,000-per-worker wage award at a meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress and other stakeholders. TUC says workers received only about three months of the 10 months of wage awards agreed in 2023, which were meant to run until the new minimum wage took effect in July 2024. In a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting in Abuja, TUC said the national minimum wage should be treated as a legal floor, not a ceiling. It also called for workers’ collective bargaining rights to be respected and urged leaders to focus on securing better salaries through engagement with government.
