House Must Hold Telecom Operators Accountable for Persistent Network Failures
The House of Representatives is right to summon the chief executives of major telecom operators over persistent poor network services. But the October 28 hearing must deliver more than public warnings. It should produce measurable improvements for subscribers. Dropped calls, slow internet, failed data purchases and unsuccessful transfers disrupt daily life for millions of Nigerians. They also hurt traders, remote workers, students and businesses that depend on reliable mobile connectivity to communicate, receive payments and earn a living. The Nigerian Communications Commission reported hundreds of thousands of consumer complaints in the first half of 2026. It also said millions of subscribers received compensation or refunds for poor service and failed transactions. These figures show that refunds alone cannot solve recurring network failures. Nigerians need dependable service before disruptions occur. Operators should explain their infrastructure plans, network capacity, maintenance standards and timelines for improvement. The NCC must publish clear service-quality data and enforce meaningful consequences for repeated failures. Subscribers are paying customers, not people asking for favours, and they deserve reliable calls, internet access and digital transactions.
