Chris Pappas Becomes First Openly Gay Man Elected to the US Senate
Democrat Chris Pappas won New Hampshire’s US Senate race, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the chamber. He defeated former Republican senator John E. Sununu in the November 3 election, winning the seat held by retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen. At his election watch party, Pappas thanked his husband and said that “love and truth prevailed” despite what he called negative attacks and lies. He has served in the US House since 2018 and co-chairs the Congressional Equality Caucus. LGBTQ advocacy groups Human Rights Campaign and GLAAD congratulated him on the historic win.
