Deceived and Exploited: Three Plateau Women Trafficked to Mali for Prostitution
Three young women from Plateau State were lured with promises of legitimate jobs in Lagos. Their journey instead took them through Cotonou to Mali, where they were forced into prostitution and suffered severe abuse. Becky Ibrahim, 35, lost her husband and left home to support her three children. Twenty-four-year-old Blessing Nanging sought work to feed her two kids. Twenty-three-year-old Miracle Yakubu attempted to escape but was beaten and stabbed for resisting. The Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organization and the BIROM Association in Lagos coordinated their rescue and safe return to Plateau State. Community leaders warn others to beware of fake overseas job offers. Human rights advocates are calling for stronger anti-trafficking laws, better funding for NAPTIP and community by-laws to hold traffickers and negligent guardians accountable. They also raised alarm over passport seizures and labour exploitation of Nigerians in Egypt.
