Afenifere Warns Against Imposed Regionalism, Backs Stronger States
Afenifere has rejected proposals to divide Nigeria into regions, warning that imposing regional boundaries without the consent of affected communities could fuel ethnic tensions and political instability. The group’s position follows proposals by the Igbo Leaders of Thought for a 10-region structure, resource control, regional policing and a pause in the 2027 general elections until restructuring is completed. Afenifere argues that Nigeria’s many ethnic communities, especially minorities in the South-South and North-Central, must be protected. It supports the 2014 National Conference recommendations, including stronger states, more state powers over policing and mining, and voluntary regional mergers approved by the people.
