Federal High Court Awards N200m to Widow Over Police Killing of Imam
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Nigeria Police Force to pay N200 million in damages to the widow of Mallam Kabiru Babai after finding the police guilty of unlawfully depriving him of his fundamental right to life. Justice Peter Lifu ruled that the shooting by Sgt. Moses Samuel was unlawful and granted compensatory and exemplary damages. While the court declined to force the Attorney-General to prosecute Samuel directly, it directed police authorities to institute criminal proceedings. Babai, a truck driver and imam, was repairing his vehicle in Osogbo, Osun State, in December 2021 when officers allegedly struck him with a shovel and rifle butt before shooting him in the chest. The judgment recognises the gravity of the violation and its impact on his widow and children.
