Subsidy Removal Deepened Hardship Without Clear Benefits, Adesina Says
Ayo Adesina, a former House of Representatives candidate in Ogun State, has criticised the removal of petrol subsidy, saying it has increased hardship for households and businesses without delivering visible benefits. He argued that the savings claimed by the Federal Government have not translated into better living conditions. He also alleged that funds may be mismanaged or diverted at federal and state levels. Adesina said higher petrol prices have worsened operating costs for manufacturers already facing poor infrastructure, unreliable power supply and insecurity. He noted that petrol rose from about ₦169 per litre to more than ₦1,400 after the policy took effect. While acknowledging fraud in the subsidy system, he said those responsible should have been prosecuted instead of ending the programme. He called for the subsidy to be reinstated alongside stronger measures to stop corruption and leakages.
