New York and 21 States Challenge US Rule on Green Cards and Public Benefits

New York and 21 other US states have sued the Trump administration over a proposed Department of Homeland Security rule that could make it harder for some immigrants to obtain green cards, visas or entry into the country. The rule would broaden the factors immigration officers may consider when deciding if an applicant is likely to become a “public charge.” These could include non-cash benefits such as Medicaid, food assistance, housing vouchers and school meal programmes. The states argue that the agency exceeded its legal authority and failed to assess the likely strain on state healthcare and welfare systems. They are asking a federal court in New York to block the rule before it takes effect.
