Orire School Kidnapping: Witness Recounts 56 Days of Hunger and Abuse in Captivity

A DSS witness has told a Federal High Court in Abuja that 49 students and teachers abducted from schools in Oyo State’s Orire Local Government Area endured 56 days of harsh captivity. The witness said the victims, including children as young as one and a half, were moved across six camps barefoot. They reportedly slept outdoors through rain and intense heat, suffered hunger and shared small amounts of dirty water. According to the testimony, the kidnappers said they wanted the release of Ansaru members, not ransom. Two teachers were reportedly taken away and killed during the ordeal. The victims were eventually rescued after security forces engaged the kidnappers at their sixth camp. The defendants will remain in DSS custody as the trial continues, with cross-examination expected on September 18.
