Ebonyi LG Election: Voter Apathy Leaves Power in Familiar Hands

Ebonyi State has concluded its local government elections, with the son of a former governor and current Minister of Works emerging as chairman. Beyond the winner’s identity, the bigger issue is how low participation allows entrenched political structures to keep winning. When most voters stay home, party loyalists and candidates with stronger structures dominate the process. Claims that votes will not count may feel understandable, but apathy hands power to those who are organised, well-funded and willing to mobilise. Osun showed that high turnout can change the outcome, even under pressure. Nigerians must take local government elections as seriously as national polls, reject intimidation and demand internal democracy within political parties. Democracy cannot grow when citizens abandon grassroots politics and complain only after results are declared. Ebonyi and other states need leaders chosen by the people, not merely by political families and party structures.
