Understanding the Perceptual Elements of Music

Psychoacoustics studies how people perceive sound. Since the 1930s, it has shaped many explanations of music’s basic elements. C. E. Another defines music more broadly through sound, structure and artistic intent. The subject remains open to further research, especially on which perceptual elements can be independently adjusted to create specific musical effects.
