Why Fuel Subsidies and Welfare Still Matter to Nigerians
Subsidy is not a bad word. Governments around the world use subsidies and welfare programmes to ease the cost of living and support economic activity. Nigeria earns significant revenue from crude oil, so Nigerians should benefit from affordable energy. The government can use tax concessions or other support to help local refiners reduce the price of petrol supplied to filling stations. Cheaper fuel would support transport, food distribution and small businesses that rely on generators. For many informal-sector workers, affordable energy is essential to keeping their businesses open and sustaining jobs.
