Jonathan Seeks Limits on Governors’ Election-Day Mobilisation in Off-Cycle Polls
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called for an urgent national dialogue on the growing presence of serving governors, senior officials and influential political figures in states holding off-cycle elections. In a statement on the Osun governorship election, Jonathan said large political delegations, aides and security details could create anxiety, intimidation and undue pressure on voters and opponents. He said political parties have a right to campaign and mobilise, but election-day conduct must have clear limits. He urged the National Peace Committee to convene INEC, political parties, security agencies, the National Assembly, the Nigerian Bar Association, governors, civil society and the media. The goal, he said, should be to agree on standards that protect free, fair and peaceful elections before the practice becomes normal.
