Dangote’s Former Portuguese Security Chief Dies in Portugal After Alleged Detention Over Resignation
José Miguel Gaspar Mateus, a Portuguese security specialist formerly employed by Dangote Industries, has died in a motorcycle accident in Portugal. His lawyer alleges that Miguel suffered severe emotional distress after his arrest and detention in Lagos following his resignation from the company. According to the lawyer, Miguel resigned in May 2026 after his employment contract had expired and he accepted another job offer in Abuja. He alleges that Miguel was arrested over claims of sabotage, made to sign an indemnity undertaking and later had his home searched. The lawyer said a police report found no incriminating evidence and that the complainants did not substantiate their allegations. He also claimed that the investigation cost Miguel his new job and worsened his mental health after he returned to Portugal. The lawyer says Miguel’s wife may now pursue a planned fundamental-rights case against the company and police authorities. Dangote Industries and the Nigeria Police Force had not responded to requests for comment at the time of the report.
