CISLAC Warns Against Political Interference in EFCC Action on Osun Accounts

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has urged the Federal Government to protect the operational independence of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following reports of presidential intervention in the agency’s action involving Osun State Government accounts. The group said that although government operations should not be unnecessarily disrupted, direct political involvement in an ongoing enforcement matter could weaken public confidence in anti-corruption institutions. It argued that where there is credible evidence of possible diversion or misuse of public funds, investigators and the courts should be allowed to handle the matter without interference. CISLAC said account-freezing orders are preventive measures, not proof of guilt, and should be backed by timely investigations and judicial oversight. The organisation said the EFCC reportedly obtained a Federal High Court order over the Osun accounts and called on the National Assembly to strengthen safeguards against political interference in anti-corruption agencies.
