Which Business Process Should You Automate First?
Many businesses start automation with the task that consumes the most staff time. That can help, but it is not always the best first move. Start with processes that are repetitive, rule-based, high-volume, error-prone and easy to measure. Examples include invoice processing, payroll calculations, payment reconciliation, customer onboarding, appointment reminders, order processing, routine reports and data entry between systems. Do not automate a broken process. First remove unnecessary steps, then automate the work that remains. Good automation reduces repetitive tasks and gives employees more time for customers, sales, decisions and problem-solving. If you could automate one process in your business today, which one would save the most time, money or customer frustration?
