Nigeria’s Unity Needs an Honest Debate, Not Another Independence Day Speech
I did not watch President Tinubu’s October 1 address because I expected the same promises Nigerians have heard from successive leaders while the country continues to decline. Since 1966, Nigeria has endured coups, civil war, military rule, corruption, human-rights abuses and political violence. The consequences are visible in poverty, insecurity and weak public institutions. I believe Independence Day should force us to ask difficult questions about whether the current union is working. Rather than preserving an arrangement that many citizens consider unworkable, Nigeria should consider a peaceful referendum on its future.
